The Le Mans 24-hour race was again unique in 2017. The warmest temperatures in years increased the pressure on drivers and equipment, and the failure rate was unusually high. Toyota had the faster pace, as in previous years, but lost two of the three cars within 30 minutes in the night, while the third Toyota spent a long time in the pits.

The road to victory seemed clear for the Porsche with starting number 1, but late Sunday morning technical problems threw a spanner in the works. Surprisingly, victory went to the No. 2 Porsche, despite an unscheduled one-hour pit stop on Saturday night. Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber, however, did not give up and drove home the 19th overall victory for Porsche on the Sarthe.

In the LMGTE-Pro class, the new mid-engined 911 RSR started for the first time and just missed the podium on its Le Mans debut. In the LMGTE-Am class, the Dempsey-Proton team achieved the best Porsche result.
